DDD Foster Care for Adults in Phoenix and Tuscon Areas

A Place To Call Home provides all necessary training to become a licensed Adult Developmental Home (ADH) to provide foster care in Arizona for an adult with developmental disabilities. Adults are placed by the Arizona Department of Economic Security's Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD). On-going support and supervision is provided by A Place To Call Home as well as any specialized or individualized training that is deemed necessary to enhance the skill level of foster parents, in particular, for the special needs of adult placements. A licensed foster home for adults with developmental disabilities may provide care for up to three adults. Foster care for adults placed by DDD is typically long term, as the service plan for many adults in foster care is to preserve continuity and stability and to offer a long lasting, permanent family support and environment. A Place To Call Home places great emphasis and takes diligent time in matching adults to their foster family. In an effort to contribute to a successful family dynamic, an adult profile is constructed to identify the adult best suited for your family as well as the best family suited for the adult. The adult profile information is collected from the foster family, incorporating the special needs of the adult placement, the family's skill level and the family's care interests.

The DDD Foster Care Program for Adults is a specialized program for adults placed in foster care, ages 18 years of age and older, who have been diagnosed with a developmental disability. Developmental disabilities are characterized as having one or a component of the four primary disabilities: Mental Retardation, Epilepsy, Autism or Cerebral Palsy. Adults living in an Adult Developmental Home are placed by the Division of Developmental Disabilities, oftentimes with the involvement of family members and the legal guardian so that the adult may receive the specialized care services for their developmental disability offered by an Adult Developmental Home. Their degree of supervision and support varies, based on the severity of the developmental disability. Many of the adults are enrolled in day programs or work at jobs and are able to have a high quality and variety of life experiences. Adults with developmental disabilities commonly experience delays and operative limitations in learning, language, self-care, mobility, economic self-sufficiency and in their capacity for independent living. Adults with develop- mental disabilities require assistance and/or supervision with activities of daily living, supervision and foster parents that will support their development and growth both in the home and through services provided by DDD to increase their independent level of functioning. DDD Foster Care for Adults is a specialized level of foster care, requiring advanced training provided by A Place To Call Home to ensure expert care for the adults and their developmental disability care needs.

Adults placed in foster homes require very special care and extraordinary com- mitment from their foster parents. Adults in foster care may not have received sufficient care for their special needs in previous placements and could have experienced some form of abuse, neglect and/or abandonment at some point in their life. Other times, the adult's family or guardian is working in conjunction with DDD to lovingly seek experienced and expert care to assure that all the care needs for the adult are met. In general, adults with developmental disabilities thrive in Adult Developmental Homes because they provide safety and stability by a loving and committed foster family.
